9 Tips to upgrading your IELTS Writing skills

Many students face difficulties achieving targeted band scores, specifically in IELTS writing. Are you also one of those?

Firstly, it is essential to understand the exam format to excel in your skills.
The writing section comprises two tasks:
Task 1: This task is different for both academic and general training
Academic: You need to write at least 150 words report regarding an image provided. It could be a bar graph, line graph, pie chart, diagram, etc.
General Training: GT candidates are expected to write a letter (formal, informal, or semi-formal) in 150 words.
Task 2: Writing task 2 is similar to academics and GT. Here you are supposed to write down an essay of a minimum of 250 words, and this essay includes an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion at last.
After understanding the format, look at the parameters of the assessment.

Parameters of assessment during writing tasks:

The whole assessment criteria have four main points, these are:

  • Task achievement- how efficiently you grasp the main points and your ability to express them in your way.
  • Cohesion and coherence assess the ability to organise ideas and how you use linkage words and cohesive devices such as in addition, for Instance, furthermore, moreover, etc.
  • Lexical resource- It judges your range of vocabulary that you can efficiently use while writing conveying precise meaning.
  • Grammatical range and accuracy include the number of grammatical structures you use and how frequently you make mistakes.

9 Useful tips for writing tasks

  • Keep it simple-
    Simplicity has its beauty. You will be judged on your ability to express your thoughts cohesively in English.
    In Task1 Academic: Instead of using complex words, try to dwell on simpler words that efficiently express what the picture represents.
    Both Task 1 and Task 2 require relevancy and to the point detail. Extra irrelevant detailing, which does not make any difference if removed, must be avoided.

 

  • Be Precise-
    Before skipping to the next point, practice sufficiently elaborating on each point. In the essay, the healthy practice is to dwell on each fact. The sole purpose is to make the writing meaningful.
    In Both: Avoid repetition of exact words, phrases, and sentences. Try to use synonyms and practice rephrasing as much as possible.
    Exhibit usage of various sentences:
    Our text must include a mixture of simple, compound, and complex sentences. Inclusion of similar sentence structures must be avoided.
    Writing balanced paragraphs of the same length with a slight difference of 12-15 words is acceptable. Neither of the sections should appear to be hurried nor like a rush job.

 

  • Avoid fundamental errors-
    Observe basic grammar rules and punctuation: Though it is impossible to acquire 100% accuracy in Grammar, you must make sure not to commit obvious mistakes regarding fundamental knowledge.

 

  • Every word counts-
    You must never forget that you can be penalised for writing less than the minimum words in the IELTS exam. You can write as many possible words, but still, you must use your time wisely. You must practice completing both tasks on time and check your work.

 

  • Keep in mind the nature of the test.
    Also, the writing style should reflect the academic nature of the test, so practice using a semi-formal or neutral tone of writing.
    For Instance, instead of don’t, use do not, cannot in place of can’t and does not instead of doesn’t.
    Avoid using imprecise language like really, very, so, a lot. Instead, use strong words. Here is what you can use:
    Very good- top-notch, splendid, terrific, excellent, magnificent, fabulous, outstanding, etc
    Very bad- horrible, distressing, terrible, awful
    Very delicious- flavourful, appetising, delectable, scrumptious, palatable, etc
    A lot of- a significant number of, many, a multitude of. Avoid using “There is/ There are”
    If you try to write concisely, There is/these are extra words that are not required.
    There are many social evils prevailing in society.
    A multitude of social evils is prevailing in society.

 

  • Understand the question well
    Read the question carefully and build an understanding of what exactly is being asked. Accordingly, making the whole structure of the writing as planning plays an essential role here.
    Begin your answer by making a general statement representing the topic
    Focus on both advantages and disadvantages of the topic in a balanced way
    Try to express your individualistic ideas instead of copying language from the instructions. The candidate is expected to paraphrase or use their own words to judge their language capability. Organising the answers helps make your text visually appealing. You must systematically plan each part of an essay into paragraphs.

 

  • Know your approach:
    Task 1 determines the ability to identify the most important information in the picture. You must give structured details using accurate language.
    Task2 assesses the candidate’s ability to clear and organise thoughts using appropriate language. Use the correct format and stay focused while writing. You can be penalised for going off-topic or incomplete explanations, and one must be focused on the central theme.
    Each task requires a specific approach like
    Task1 (Academic):
    Firstly, identify the main trends and features
    In the introduction, rewrite given information using synonyms and grammatical transformation.
    Logically organise the main paragraph with the relevant data
    At last, summarise the data from the main paragraphs in the conclusion
    Task1 (General Training)
    Analyse the question
    Brainstorm your ideas using bullet points
    Plan the paragraphs according to the bullet points
    Identify what closings and salutations are acceptable
    Write the letter in the proper format
    Task2
    In the introduction, rephrase the question statement and form a thesis statement based on your opinion. Answer the question or your opinion in the introduction itself. Also, state the reason for your answer in brief, which will increase the text’s readability.
    In the body paragraph, address each idea in one topic sentence and use one topic sentence to start each paragraph. Meanwhile, the rest of the section represents the explanation and examples supporting the topic sentence.
    Your strongest body paragraph should come first to create a strong impression on the reader’s mind. If you have the three sections, the best one first, the weakest in the second, and the second strongest.
    At last, it’s time to sum up, or wind up all your thoughts in conclusion.

 

  • Spare time for proofreading
    It is essential to reserve time for proofreading at last to read and analyse your data. It is helpful to look for minor mistakes in Grammar and spelling, and it is the time to check cohesiveness and eliminate errors.
  • Put efforts daily
    Transcribe your daily activities into words and write something every day. Be consistent in practice to naturally dwell on the abilities leading to perfection.
    Learning vocabulary is not sufficient unless you can apply it. Closely pay attention to the words which commonly go together.
    Build the ability to think about ongoing life situations and bring them into words. Remember, this is no shortcut to hard work, and you need to put in efforts persistently until you reach your desired goal.
