Why Immigration to Canada is on Rise Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic?

With a total of 67,000 international students immigrated to study in Canada in 2020, it seems that even the covid-19 pandemic and Canada covid travel restrictions are not deterring people from immigration. Despite the internal factors and the economic downturn, agencies have reported a high global interest in immigrating to Canada.

In a survey conducted by the World Education Service in June, nearly 50% of the respondents said that the COVID-19 pandemic had boosted their interest in immigrating to Canada. Interestingly, there are more people interested in immigrating to Canada in June amid the coronavirus than back in April in the same survey. Almost 45% of respondents were eager to settle in Canada, while 6% were less interested. One of the main reasons to immigrate to Canada is the country’s better economy. However, most of the respondents were students wanting to study abroad in Canada.

But why immigration to Canada is on the rise amid the covid-19 pandemic?

That’s simple, the country’s policies and new study and work visa flexibilities have increased immigration to Canada. Since Canadian schools are reopening for international students, 56,000 international students have enrolled in multiple academic programs. Interestingly, Canada is now providing work and study permits by mail. But there may be two main reasons for increased immigration to Canada amid the covid-19 pandemic. Firstly the better economic conditions, and second it offers is better education and career opportunities.

Most international students prefer Canada to study abroad over other popular destinations such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, and France. Here are the advantages of study abroad in Canada that could be a reason why immigration to Canada is on the rise amid the covid-19 pandemic.

  • International students in Canada are permitted to work for up to 20 hours weekly during the semester and full-time during breaks.
  • Tuition fees and other educational costs are relatively low in comparison to other countries.
  • International students who study in Canada can bring their in-law partner, spouse, or children to Canada. Spouse and in-law partners will get an open-work permit, and the children can study in public elementary or secondary schools.
  • Students can first study and then work in Canada for up to 3 years on an open work permit.

Eligibility for Canada Student Visa

You won’t need a study permit to study in Canada if your program is less than 6 months, you’re a member of foreign armed forces or you’re a family member or staff of a foreign representative in Canada. Well here is the criteria to apply for a Canada student visa.

  • You’ve been accepted by a designated learning institute (DLI)
  • You must have evidence to prove that you’ve enough funds to pay your tuition and bear all living expenses.
  • You must have evidence to prove that you’ve enough funds to pay your tuition and bear all living expenses.

Note: Aforementioned procedure is applicable for those who don’t reside in China, India, Morocco, Pakistan, Philippines, Senegal, and Vietnam. You can read more about this expedited study permit processing program called  Student Direct Stream (SDS).

Apart from this, you need to convince the Visa Officer that you will leave Canada after finishing your studies and don’t misuse your Canada student visa.

With these easy immigration rules, thousands of students apply for a Canada Student Visa and invest in the emerging economy. You can later work in Canada as a student or apply for a Temporary Resident Visa.

Another reason for this increased immigration to Canada is the high demand for skilled immigrants. Mass labor loss happened due to the COVID-19 pandemic in almost every sector. Hence, recruiting more skilled resources will be the top priority of the critical industries, even in the post-pandemic phase. But the highest number of immigrants in Canada is reserved for international students, coming to the country with immature dreams and ambitions.
